Travis Price – Guide

A day in Georgetown, past and present
A peak into the home that housed 6 generations of Martha Washington’s family, an Austrian-Euro café for lunch, and an inside look into the exclusive Georgetown’s interior design and architecture world…

You will begin the day at Tudor Place, 5 ½ lushly landscaped acres in Georgetown, opened this Monday only to you! You will hear the stories of Martha Washington’s descendants and those of the servants and enslaved workers who served them, as well as tour through collections including more than 15,000 decorative arts items, archival, historic and archaeological artifacts, and a Washington Collection larger than any outside Mount Vernon. In the gardens you will trace the history and horticulture of the witness trees, heirloom plants and flowers, and abundant English boxwood that thrive and understand the influence of Federal-style design on the landscape; view how orchards, stables, and grazing land made way for the lawns, fountains, and garden “rooms” of today.

Then you will lunch at Leopold’s Kafe, a hip Euro-Austrian café in charming Cady’s Alley, Georgetown’s Design District and winner of a number of significant architectural awards. While you enjoy your tasty lunch, Travis Price, the architect of Leopold’s Kafe and a Professor of Architecture at Catholic University whose studio is right in Cady’s Alley, will share with you the significance of Cady’s Alley to the design world – not only for Georgetown mansions, but all around DC and the country. Georgetown’s noted half-Austrian, half-Brazilian real estate developer Anthony Lanier has used European-style architectural craftsmanship to provide the perfect urban setting for the largest collection of design studios in Greater Washington.

After lunch you will have the option to tour two of these studios, Contemporaria and Resource Furniture. Contemporaria, like its name, offers a complete range of services from interior design and interior architecture to remodeling and construction, in contemporary style; a one stop shop for all design needs. Resource Furniture which specializes in European furniture, hand-selects, imports and distributes innovative and modern furniture from the finest manufacturers, including the space-saving line of transforming furniture designed and made in Italy by Clei, srl. They have showrooms in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Washington D.C., Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Montreal & Mexico City.

It is encouraged to get out, walk, and enjoy Georgetown in all its cobblestoned glory on what will hopefully be a beautiful September day in Georgetown. However, if you have concerns about too much walking, we still encourage you to participate, as accommodations will be made. Please contact Lyndsey Adams for more details, Ladams@cre.org or (312) 329-8533.
