Education and Experience
Dr. Nugent currently provides consulting expertise to the economic development community related to the Life Sciences industry. He currently serves on the board of seCTer (Southeastern Connecticut Enterprise Region) and as co-chair of seCTer’s Economic Development & Marketing Committee. He also serves as the chairman for the Preston Redevelopment Agency that is driving the revitalization of a 393 acre former state mental hospital in Preston, CT. He was a board member for Kalon Biotherapeutics until Fujifilm Diosynth Biotechnologies acquired the company in December of 2014. He is a former co-owner of iLAB Technical Facilities Solutions that provided laboratory design, planning, programming and consulting services. In 2011, Dr. Nugent retired from Pfizer where he was Vice President of Global Operations with operational responsibility for Pfizer’s R&D facilities worldwide. Prior to this he led the Global Strategic Facilities Planning (GSFP) effort focused on optimizing the utilization of laboratory space and streamlining the R&D capital planning process.
Before joining Pfizer, Dr. Nugent held a number of senior research positions for Monsanto, Searle and Pharmacia. During his time at Searle, he was involved in the development and marketing of five compounds, all of which are on the market today – most notably Celebrex. He later joined Pharmacia’s Facilities and Operations group as the head of Global Strategic Facilities Planning (GSFP).
In addition to writing numerous papers, Dr. Nugent has received many patents. He is a member of the American International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE), the American Chemical Society (ACS) and the Industrial Asset Management Council (IAMC) where he is a Fellow and a former Board Member.
Dr. Nugent received his undergraduate degree in Organic Chemistry from California State University in Los Angeles and his PhD in Synthetic Organic Chemistry from the University of California at Santa Barbara.
In his free time, Dr. Nugent serves on the Board of Education for the Town of Preston and the Connecticut Association for Boards of Education. He spends his free time on his passions (gardening, music, sports, reading, driving) and time with his life partner of 38 years.
