Downtowns Emerging in New Forms

Abstract: Retail and office development continues to show a growing affinity for suburban locations and will play a relatively less prominent role in America’s downtowns. This article describes how new measures of success in balancing commerce with culture, leisure, government, specialty shopping and celebration will emphasize downtown’s role as a true community focal point.
