Abstract: This article 1) provides a national overview of the “public housing business;” 2) summarizes the major structural changes resulting in the privatization of the management and redevelopment of public housing; and 3) describes The Habitat Company’s redevelopment experience of a major public housing property in Chicago. The “public housing business” is undergoing dramatic changes and the time and talents of market-oriented real estate professionals, especially CREs, are needed in this process of community building.
