Abstract: New Urbanism or TND development is seen as the tool to implement Smart Growth, but the authors see TND as a subset of the Smart Growth initiative, not the sole provider of design criteria necessary to qualify a project as “Smart Growth.” The ultimate goal is to create a sense of “place,” a sense of how humans relate to and fit into both the natural and the built environment. Making these two concepts work seamlessly is what ultimately defines “Smart Growth.”
