Abstract: Here the author presents a brief review of the evolution of walkways in relation to commercial property and then identifies three categories of factors that contribute to falls—environmental, human, and configurational. The guide then discusses how human physiological and cognitive factors are affected by the condition of walkways. To make walkways safe places for pedestrians, loss prevention efforts need to account for these eleven configurational factors in relation to the maintenance, construction and design of walkways.
