- Middle Collegiate Church
Middle Collegiate Church has been worshiping in the lower Manhattan community for nearly 400 years. It has been led by the Rev. Dr. Jacqui Lewis for the past 18 years, during which time the congregation has grown from 400 to 2,000 members. In Dec 2020, the main Church building was destroyed by a fire, and the church’s five-story building was damaged. The church is about to begin construction to rehabilitate the five-story building (Phase 1 project).
The Phase 2 project – for which Counselor assistance is requested – will address the Second Avenue parcel. The church aims to redevelop their property into a mission-aligned use that will serve the community and generate sustainable income to support their ministry and operation, with the goal of advancing their calling to “uproot injustice, eradicate poverty, care for the brokenhearted, nurture the planet, and build the reign of God on earth.”
Key Questions to be Addressed
- What can Middle Collegiate build on the site that burnt down which fits with their mission and serves the community? They would be interested in providing affordable housing or other community-serving space.
- Should they pursue partnering with their neighbor (who caused the fire)? What is the incremental value of the additional/expanded site? Is the potential benefit worth the (likely significant) effort?
