CLEMENTS’ STUDENTS TO COMPETE IN NATIONAL REAL ESTATE CONTEST
A team of students mentored by Walter S. Clements, CRE, director, Lewis White Real Estate Center, University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), Kansas City, Mo., is vying for a $50,000 prize in a premier national real estate competition sponsored by the Urban Land Institute. The students, from UMKC, Kansas State University and the University of Kansas, will compete against teams from Harvard, Yale, Purdue and Ball State universities to create a redevelopment proposal for an area of Minneapolis called Downtown East. The winning team will be chosen in April. The students were finalists in a previous contest in which 58 teams representing 70 universities across the United States and Canada competed. - Walter Clements, CRE
 
NYLEN APPOINTED CHAIR OF LOCAL BOARD OF EQUALIZATION
Kathleen Nylen, CRE, principal, PBTK Consulting, LLC, Las Vegas, recently was appointed chair of the Clark County Board of Equalization for a second four-year term. In her role, Nylen will conduct hearings where property owners are appealing their assessments. - Kathleen Nylen, CRE
 
CRES CONTRIBUTE TO APPRAISAL INSTITUTE BOOK
CREs John G. Ellis, managing director, Integra Realty Resources/Los Angeles; Anthony S. Graziano, executive director, Integra Realty Resources-Coastal, New Jersey, Toms River, N. J.; Thomas O. Jackson, president, principal consultant, Real Property Analytics, Inc., College Station, Texas, and the late Michael Y. Cannon, Miami, contributed case studies to a book published in 2012 by the Appraisal Institute entitled Applications in Litigation Valuation: A Pragmatist’s Guide. Ellis wrote on lease renewal; Graziano wrote on matrimonial dissolution; Jackson wrote on environmental contamination; and Cannon wrote on bankruptcy.
 
ZINN HONORED BY PHILADELPHIA VOLUNTEER GROUP
Karen I. Zinn, CRE, principal, KZB Advisors, Southampton, Pa., recently was honored by the Business Volunteers for the Arts with the 2012 Volunteer of the Year Award for her work with Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens. Zinn was recognized for helping the Gardens develop a long-term strategic plan for its real estate. She was paired with the organization through a Philadelphia arts council that works to match the skills of area professionals with nonprofits in need of counsel. - Karen Zinn, CRE
 
LEVY ADDRESSES INDUSTRY AUDIENCES
Gerald M. Levy, CRE, president, Gerald M. Levy & Co. LLC, New York City, recently was a featured speaker at the Rhode Island Conference of the Society of Professional Assessors in Newport, where he spoke on the application of negotiation theory to tax assessment negotiations. Levy also was the featured speaker at a meeting of the Asset Management Round Table in New York City where he spoke on “The Resolution of Commercial Lease Disputes.” - Gerald Levy, CRE
 
TIMM APPOINTED COMMISSIONER FOR AREA ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT BOARDS
Wendy Timm, CRE, executive vice president, Enhanced Value Strategies St. Louis, Mo., has been appointed to a three-year term by Mayor Francis Slay to serve as a commissioner on three economic development boards: Land Clearance for Redevelopment, Enhanced Enterprise Zone Board; and Planned Industrial Expansion Authority. - Wendy Timm, CRE
